Did you know that these plants <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> can also affect our pets? It\u2019s not extremely common for animals to develop a reaction to <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> poison ivy, but it\u2019s entirely possible. Read on to learn more. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> H <span> <\/span> ow to Spot Poison Ivy <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> When you know how to spot poison ivy, oak, or sumac, you have a better chance of <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> avoiding it for yourself and your pet. Poison ivy and poison oak both have sets of three <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> shiny leaflets\u2014remember the simple rhyme \u201cleaves of three, let them be.\u201d Poison <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> sumac most often grows in swampy or bog-like areas, so you\u2019re more likely to <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> encounter it near a body of water. Sumac plants have clusters of leaflets, so the three- <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> leaf rule doesn\u2019t really apply there. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> No matter what kind of plants grow around your local area, you can try to avoid any <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> trouble by keeping your pet away from shrubbery and thick forested areas when you\u2019re <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> outdoors. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> Symptoms in Pets <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> It turns out that our pets are far less likely to experience a reaction to poison ivy, oak, or <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> sumac than we are, and for one simple reason. They are covered in fur! That pretty coat <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> largely blocks the irritating agent\u2014an oil called urushiol\u2014from reaching their skin. It is <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> possible, though, for your pet to develop a rash on exposed areas of skin that aren\u2019t <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> completely covered in fur. The main sign is, of course, a red, bumpy rash. You\u2019ll also <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> probably see your pet scratching or biting intensely at the itchy area. It\u2019s possible for <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> blisters to appear if the problem persists. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> Treating Poison Ivy Rashes <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> If your furry pal suffers a rash caused by poison ivy, oak, or sumac, you\u2019ll want to bathe <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> them with a pet-safe oatmeal shampoo. (Don\u2019t get any in your pet\u2019s mouth or eyes.) <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> That is usually enough to get rid of the urushiol substance and help your pet feel more <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> comfortable. However, let your vet know if your pet is still itchy. And remember to wear <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> gloves while bathing your pet so that you don\u2019t get any of the irritating substance on <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> your own skin. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> If you suspect that your pet is itching because of contact with poison ivy, oak, or sumac, <\/span> <\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"display: initial;\"> let your veterinarian know.
