As many as one out of three pets are lost or stolen at some point over the course of their lives. That’s a pretty sobering statistic! While we hope all of our furry patients are safe and sound at home, this is one area where it definitely pays to take a few precautions. Read on as a vet lists some things you can do to keep your beloved pet from getting lost.

 Keep Kitty In

While Fluffy may love leaving dusty pawprints on your car or bringing you dead ‘presents,’ she’s much safer staying inside. Keeping your feline buddy in won’t only greatly reduce the chances of her getting lost: it also protects her from hazards like cars, weather, and other animals.

 Training Fido

Your canine companion should know basic obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. This is very important, as that training can help keep Fido from running off if you drop his leash or if he slips out the door.

 Secure Yard

Does your dog have a yard to run and play in? That’s great! However, Fido has quite a taste of adventure, and is not above sneaking out to go exploring. Make sure that your fencing is secure, and that your pup can’t go over, under, or through it. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate.

 Leash

Always keep Fido leashed whenever you take him off your property, even if he is really well-trained. Better safe than sorry!

 Spay/Neuter

If your pet isn’t fixed, he or she may very well run away to go looking for love. Make that appointment today!

 Vigilance

Lost pet reports go up significantly around July 4th and New Years’ Eve, when the noise of fireworks frightens many pets, causing them to flee in fear. Thunderstorms can also scare our furry pals. Be extra careful at these times!

 GPS Collars

This is a fairly new technology, and one we’re thrilled to see. There are different types of these, so be sure to do some research before purchasing one. You’ll want to look at reviews, of course, but it’s also important to check subscription fees and perks.

Do you want to learn more about microchipping?
